Here are the hi-lights from the past week:
First, both have gotten back to their birth weight, which they like to see happen before they are 2 weeks old. Second, they both have come down on their respiratory support. They both are breathing using a high flow nasal cannula at a low level. The next step will be to take them off all respiratory support. Third, the doctors continue to increase the amount they are being fed.
Both kids had head ultrasounds at the beginning of last week. Hunter also had a renal ultrasounds since he was showing an enlarged kidney in ultrasounds before birth. Both Hunter's renal and head ultrasounds came back normal. Kaitlyn's head ultrasound came back showing a level 2 bleed. They will continue to monitor this, but the doctors don't seem to be too concerned about it at this point.
They have started having me do what is called "kangaroo care". Basically, it is a way to sit and hold the babies that allows for more skin-to-skin contact. This type of holding seems to have benefits for both mom and babies. Not only does it help with emotional bonding, but it helps the babies to regulate body temperature, breathing, and heart rate. It also is supposed to help mom with milk production.
I think that about covers it for the week. I will post more again, probably next Monday.
